Charming Boka Kotorska Bay: Perast / Gospa od Škrpjela / Ljuta

Perast is one of the most beautiful places on Montenegro coast. It’s located 12 km from Kotor. Just like all of Boka Kotorska Bay, Perast has a long history. The beautiful Old town is named after the Illyrian tribe Pirusta. According to legend, Queen Teuta wanted to secure the entrance to the bay, so she settled the eastern part of Risan with a tribe from Albania. Throughout history, many have sought to conquer Perast, from the Byzantine Empire to the Venetian, French and Austrian invaders. Each of them, has left a significant mark on this wonderful place. Perast is first and foremost a maritime town. What makes Perast unique and sets it apart from other cities is its construction structure. It got its present appearance in the 17th and 18th centuries with the most beautiful examples of Baroque style in the entire Adriatic. In fact, Perast has only one long street that stretches by the sea. The charming stone family houses are the most striking in Perast. It’s a very small with only 350 inhabitans, but has about 18 churches and 19 palaces. It’s very peaceful town, but it attracts many tourists with its unique beauty. The symbol of the town is St. Nicholas Church with its impressive Bell tower 55 meters high. From the shore of the town it’s an amazing view of Our Lady of the Rocks (Gospa od Škrpjela). This famous artificial island was created by throwing rocks and sinking ships on an underwater rock. It also houses the church of the same name, which was erected exactly where the image of the Virgin Mary appeared to the sailors on July 22, 1452. On this day, locals sail boats to the island each year, carrying new stones. The traditional ritual has a practical side as well, because it compensates for the stones taken by the sea. Here is also the most famous and valuable tapestry. She was bound by Jacinta Kunic, waiting for the full 25 years, her darling to return from the ship. She decorated a kind of symbol of love with her own hair. It can be seen that the hair in the tapestry was gradually getting lighter until it was completely gray. And it is still rumored that she was blinded afterwards. Take a look on the photos below. Hope you’ll enjoy as I did while I was touring it 🙂 After Perast and Gospa od Škrpjela tour, I took a lunch break in a cute little place Ljuta called by the same name of the river.

  1. Predivno primorsko mjesto.

Hvala ti najlepse
